Overview

The NYC Human Services Data Project (HSData) is a cross-sector led initiative to help New York City’s nonprofit service providers more easily and effectively manage data, benchmark performance, and share information with stakeholders and funding sources.

HSData is part of a task force convened by New York City’s Office of the Mayor, under the direction of Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Linda Gibbs, to strengthen nonprofits and help the City’s vulnerable populations receive high quality support during a difficult economic period. Overseen by a workgroup of nonprofit, foundation, and government leaders, HSData is focused on identifying and implementing solutions to address sector-wide data challenges. In October, 2009, New York City was awarded a “Strengthening Communities” grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the Human Services Data Project and work is actively underway.

The priorities of HSData are to facilitate the means for NYC’s human service providers to:

  1. Track performance results in relation to common measures to facilitate peer learning and progress within their respective fields;
  2. Analyze financial information by comparing it to that of similar organizations to gain insights about their own fiscal practices; and,
  3. Store institutional documents in an electronic repository to reduce the redundant exchange of paperwork with multiple funding sources.
